Tia Oros Peters
"Tia Oros Peters is honored to be a Shiwi woman, mother, (great)grandmother, aunty, wife, writer, organizer,
and cultural artist who has been engaged in advocacy, community building, and policy work for nearly four
decades. Tia currently serves as CEO of the Seventh Generation Fund for Indigenous Peoples, a Native
advocacy, community development, and grantmaking organization dedicated to Indigenous Peoples self-
determination and sovereignty. Founded in 1977, the organization received Consultative Status with ECOSOC
in 2017.
Its Thriving Women Program builds and supports Indigenous women and girls’ inherent strength and capacity
to create and design strategies for healing, leadership, and regenerating positive futures for their families,
communities, nations, and selves. A primary focus of this work is reclaiming a world without violence through
community generated remedies and strategies to gender-based violence against Indigenous women and girls,
(Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls / MMIWg) throughout the world.
Springing from her decades of Water protection advocacy, global diplomacy and action, Tia coined the term
Aquacide, defining it as the destruction of Water by industrial development, diversion, pollution, and
privatization and on those impacts on Indigenous Peoples’ cultural and spiritual relationships to water access
and well-being for sustainability and futurity. She is co-founder and convener of two global platforms, the
Global Indigenous Women’s Caucus (2001-2019), and Indigenous Women Worldwide (2018-present), and co-
creator of the Red Deer Center for Indigenous Thinking, Creating, and Being with her husband, Christopher
Peters.
A recognized expert in Indigenous rights, leadership development, philanthropic innovation, and justice
strategies, Tia was a fellow of the Center for Civic Partnerships (2006), the Shannon Leadership Institute
(2014), and of Philanthropy Forward for Racial Justice (2020), and recipient of Native Americans in
Philanthropy’s Louis Delgado Philanthropist of the Year Award (2019). Tia is a member of the G20 Gender
Equality Working Group, and also serves on the boards of directors for the Proteus Fund, Tools & Tiaras, and
the National Advisory Board of Grantmakers for Girls of Color. She holds a BA in Law and Society, and an
MFA in Creative Writing."
