Prof. Maniraj Sukdaven

Prof Maniraj Sukdaven, a researcher at the University of Pretoria, focuses his academic work on interreligious dialogue and social cohesion. With a background from the University of Durban-Westville, he believes that promoting understanding between religions is crucial in addressing religious intolerance and violence. His research includes underrepresented traditions such as Hinduism and African Traditional Religions, especially in the African context. Prof Sukdaven publishes independently and supervises postgraduate research in these fields. He is also leading the establishment of the Oxford Centre for Religion, Public Life and Security in Africa, which will explore religion-inspired violence and propose peacebuilding strategies through consultation with international experts.

Prof Sukdaven’s work is deeply personal, stemming from a life-threatening experience with religious intolerance. This led him to form a team of religious leaders focused on promoting tolerance and acceptance. A recent achievement includes contributing to the translation and publication of the historic Timbuktu Manuscripts. Inspired by King Ashoka’s teachings on religious respect, he aims to foster a society where diverse beliefs coexist peacefully. Beyond academia, he enjoys sports and is involved in a farming initiative to support the community of Mamelodi. Through his research and outreach, Prof Sukdaven seeks to build a more harmonious and ethically grounded society.
